Monday Musings – 10/19/09

A Pentecostal Mosh Pit…

Ottawa Ministerial - Orleans Community 016Last Friday night, I had the opportunity of speaking at an intergenerational event in the Nation’s Capital.  It was refreshing to actually have more teenagers in the audience than adults.

During the worship time, the young people were invited to come to the front of the church and express themselves in worship.  I called it a “Pentecostal Mosh Pit”.  For those who have not heard what a mosh pit is, it is an area in front of the stage at a live concert where people express positive feedback or a reflection of enjoyment about the music.  When it comes to church, some of us would know it as an altar.

It is a reminder to me of the need for understanding intergenerational language in the church.  Whether we call it an altar or a mosh pit, the result is the same.  It is a place to express positive feedback to God for what He has done and an opportunity to reflect our joy through music and worship.

I stood in the middle of the mosh pit with young people who were jumping up and down with joy and lifting their hands in adoration to God.  Call it what you will, the results should be the same.  We need to make more use of the area at the front of the church to meet with God and express our joy for what He has done in our lives.Ottawa Ministerial - Orleans Community 010

By the way, at the end of the night, the generations joined together at the mosh pit or altar (depending what generation you are from) and prayed together.  What a sight, what an experience!  There may have even been a few adults who “moshed”!

Until next Monday…
